Arrivals Hall

A bus has been parked right outside the GLASKASTEN gallery on the Sonnenberg for some time now. People get on and off, wait, seek shelter from the rain or sit down briefly on the windowsill. Yet it is rare for anyone to enter the gallery. What if this place of waiting were to become a place of arrival?

With ‘ANKUNFTSHALLE – An Invitation to Stay’, Klub Solitaer e. V. is transforming the GLASKASTEN gallery into a temporary meeting place from 19 October to 1 November 2026. For two weeks, a space will emerge here that is a cross between an exhibition, a living room, a workshop and a public meeting place. With artistic installations, workshops, discussions, performances, music and communal meals, the ARRIVAL HALL invites you to take a seat, try something new, strike up a conversation or simply stay for a while.

At the heart of it all is a question that extends far beyond the gallery: Who is actually allowed to ‘arrive’ – and who decides where we belong?

Arriving is not just a question of origin or migration. People arrive in a city, a neighbourhood, a community or a new phase of life. Some are automatically perceived as part of it, whilst others remain supposedly ‘outsiders’ even after many years. At the same time, cities and social spaces are constantly changing. Who is allowed to help shape these changes? Who is given space, and who has to fight for it? And what responsibility do those who are already there bear?

The Sonnenberg district of Chemnitz in particular – shaped by diverse life stories, social change and political debates – offers a fascinating starting point for these questions. The ANKUNFTSHALLE does not see itself as a place of ready-made answers, but rather as an invitation to discover different perspectives and to reflect together on belonging, participation and living together.

Art, conversations and collaborative experimentation

International and regional artists, collectives and academics are putting together a varied programme that invites visitors to get involved as much as it does to listen and linger.

The artist Anike Joyce Sadiq explores the question of how communal and democratic structures might be reimagined. The collective Ostdeutschland Stays Soft creates spaces for exchange, listening and shared experiences. greater form investigates how an art venue can open up more to the neighbourhood.

The collective easy easy is creating a mobile infrastructure for socialising, drinks and shared meals. The ‘Räuchermännchen*werkstatt’ by Christian Berens and Alexander Wagner combines traditional Erzgebirge craftsmanship with new perspectives. Artistic workshops, including those led by Raisan Hameed, explore memory, identity and personal experiences of arrival.

The question of who is permitted to appropriate and transform spaces is also addressed – not least against the backdrop of the increasing co-optation of public and social spaces by far-right actors. In discussions with academics, familiar categories of belonging and otherness are scrutinised, opening up new perspectives on living together.

Musical performances, including by Saeko Killy, readings, culinary events and spontaneous encounters round off the programme.

Just pop in and stay a while

The ANKUNFTSHALLE is deliberately more than just an exhibition. It also aims to reach people who might not otherwise visit a gallery. Whether you’re waiting for the bus, peering curiously through the shop window, or simply looking for a warm place and a cup of tea, you’re just as welcome as art enthusiasts and those who’d like to play an active part in shaping the event.

The doors are open daily throughout the two weeks. Admission is free.
