Galerie HINTEN

Galerie HINTEN emerged from the art and culture festival “Begehungen”. Since 2011, it has been supporting young artists from all over Europe, providing them with an independent, non-commercial project space for the exhibition of contemporary art in Chemnitz. Painting, drawing, photography, installation, sculpture – diverse forms of visual art from different genres are presented here to old-established Sonnenberg residents, tourists and newcomers alike.

    No place is ever named European Capital of Culture more than once. With RUNTERKOMMEN, the Solitaer club turns this aftermath into both a theme and an artistic method. In two chapters, international off-spaces and collectives from former candidate and Capital of Culture cities are invited to design ‘post-event spaces’: decompression rooms, cooldown spaces, after-hours venues that make productive use of the transition between exhaustion and new impulses.

    The series kicks off with a collective from the former European Capital of Culture Timișoara (2023). Entitled Almost Autonomous, the exhibition curated by Alexandra Costea brings together six artistic practices, all of which engage with deceleration within a space of seclusion and concentration. The exhibition is based on the idea that deceleration is a form of rhythmic adjustment: a departure from intensity, overload and exaggerated gestures of expression in favour of a more attentive and internalised way of working.

    The artistic processes oscillate between imagination and observation, between the construction of an inner world and an engagement with immediate reality, but also between clear intention and automatism. Repetition, mechanical gestures and the use of technology as a mediator of decisions become strategies through which the artists reduce their direct presence and allow the process to unfold almost autonomously. In this sense, technologisation and automation are not treated as ruptures, but as means of moderating expression and creating distance.

    Whether painting, drawing, mixed media or photography – the works in Almost Autonomous propose a different relationship to time and to the production of the image, in which calm, repetition and introspection do not stand in opposition to action, but are its prerequisites. Slowing down thus becomes an active state: a moment of clarification in which the process takes precedence and the image appears as its secondary result.
