Out of the box IV: Us and now – insights into the ‘Artists Unlimited’ artists’ centre in Bielefeld
In the fourth instalment of the series, in which we look at artists' residences as places of sustainable and indispensable art and cultural production in times of constantly shrinking funding landscapes, the Bielefeld-based association Artists Unlimited is our guest.
The association is celebrating its 40th birthday this year and is presenting a large-format poster exhibition that visualises the coexistence and cooperation of the 29 artists and designers currently working there.
Since 1985, the association has been based in a former stationery factory on the edge of Bielefeld city centre, where it is committed to promoting artistic creation and life. The premises house the working and living studios of the 29 current members, who are professionally active in the fields of graphics, fashion, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, performance, film, sound and curation. There is also a self-managed gallery in which 10 to 14 exhibitions by regional, national and international up-and-coming artists are shown each year.
In addition, the association established an international guest scholarship back in 1986, which has since enabled 116 international artists to live and work in Bielefeld for three months at a time.
Thanks to its intergenerational orientation and its entirely voluntary, grassroots organisation, Artists Unlimited has developed into an internationally renowned art and communication venue that not only has an impact on Bielefeld's urban society, but also far beyond the city limits.
