Arrival Terminal – An Invitation to Stay

This open call addresses people working in the fields of scenography, set design, interior design, art education and artistic spatial design.

We are seeking a spatial concept that will transform the Glaskasten Gallery on Chemnitz’s Sonnenberg into a temporary arrival hall from 19 October to 1 November 2026.

What is it about?

The starting point is now right outside our project house: a bus stop. From time to time, people waiting for the bus seek shelter from the weather in our entrance area or sit on the gallery’s windowsill. Hardly anyone enters the space. Most people want to move on. Those who arrive quickly disappear. This situation is reflective of Chemnitz and the neighbourhood in general.

Sonnenberg is a neighbourhood where migration, social transformation and demographic change are all visible at the same time. People arrive here for different reasons and with different experiences: as students, families, children, workers, refugees, neighbours or people looking for a new place to call home.

With the ‘Arrival Terminal’, we therefore wish to explore how we, as a cultural venue but also as a society, can become more welcoming, accessible and open. How must a space be designed so that people feel inclined to enter it? What conveys a sense of safety and belonging? What encourages people to take a seat, get involved, come back and stay?

The task

The Glaskasten Gallery is to become an open, welcoming and flexible space. Its design should facilitate lingering and interaction, respond to the location and the neighbourhood, and be accessible and usable by a diverse range of people.

During the project period, the arrivals hall will host, amongst other things, workshops, discussions, performances, musical events, culinary interventions and neighbourhood-focused activities .The development of these program elements is not part of the open call. However, the spatial design should create a suitable framework for them.

Process and Remuneration

From the applications, three candidates will be selected by an advisory board comprising local stakeholders and initiatives and invited to Chemnitz for a research and concept development phase.

By 20 September 2026, the selected individuals or teams will each develop a concrete spatial design.

For on-site research, all three selected candidates will each receive €750 (gross) upon submission of their concept .

A concept for implementation will then be selected. An additional fee of €2,100 (gross) will be paidfor the realisation of the project. 

Set-up can begin from 7 October 2026.
The opening will take place on 19 October 2026.
